i wanted the marketplace event inside the image, so that collecting, bidding, and losing act as compositional forces instead of activity happening somewhere else.

the empty pond is incomplete by design. it needs bidders to become itself. the auction is not only what decides who owns the work after it exists; it is one of the ways the work gets made.

the final collector receives a piece that still carries everyone who helped form it, including the people who did not win.
