bit rot

a mosaic of nfts decaying as their links break.

bit rot makes data degradation visible through the storage layer of nfts. the central image is a mosaic of hundreds of thousands of nft tiles, each tied back to a collection's smart contract.

each tile's state depends on whether the token's media can still be reached. when a link dies, the tile darkens. the slow failure of digital storage happens inside the artwork.

the project compares four storage conditions: private servers, ipfs, arweave, and onchain media. every bill uses a different mix of the four, and its decentralization percentage sets how fast it can rot.

the bills are more than skins. each one combines a persona, a symbol, and a decentralization profile. a fully onchain bill behaves differently from one built on more fragile storage, so the image doubles as a risk model.

bit rot started from a plain collector anxiety: do we know where the media we bought is stored? the piece answers by making storage failure visible, slow, and aesthetic.

the core artwork is stored onchain. arweave carries the higher quality media, and every image inside the piece has an onchain backup. the edition launched on ethereum as a 512-token collection.
